The Notarial Profession

The French notary is a public officer who acts on behalf of the French Republic. Notaries are entitled to authenticate and certify deeds for their clients. French notaries are appointed by the Minister of Justice.

Authenticity

Article 1 of the Order of 2 November 1945 states regarding the status of notaries: “Notaries are public officials established to receive all deeds and contracts to which the parties must or wish to give the authenticity attached to acts of public authority.”

By affixing their signature and seal, notaries have the power to authenticate deeds. These deeds then have the same force as a final judgement.
